Empowering the Warrior

Empowering the Warrior: Advancing Readiness and Care for the Modern Fight

Empowering the warrior means supporting active duty and veteran servicemembers across the full arc of service, from force development, to training and combat to recovery, transition, and return home. Warfighting effectiveness is built not only on capable systems and training, but on the physical, mental, and organizational well-being of the force and the families/caregivers who support it. Sustained readiness requires an integrated approach that delivers combat capability, warfighter readiness and then ensuring warriors are cared for through injury, recovery, and the long-term demands of service.

Empowering the Warrior is the unifying theme that guides KSA Integration’s work. It reflects a warfighting-first mindset grounded in operational realities and informed by how forces are designed, trained, deployed, and fight, while recognizing that readiness depends on the force’s physical, mental, material, and organizational well-being. At its core, this theme affirms that people are the decisive element of combat power, and that effective warfighting requires aligning systems, processes, and organizations around the warrior.

To deliver on this focus, KSA has organized its efforts into two mutually reinforcing portfolios: Warrior Readiness and Warrior Care. Together, they support the full spectrum of warfighting effectiveness, from preparation and execution to recovery and sustainment over time.

The Warrior Readiness portfolio concentrates on generating and maintaining combat-ready forces. KSA supports readiness by helping commands integrate threat-driven analysis, training, modernization, and acquisition transformation into coherent, executable approaches. This includes strategic analysis, modeling and simulation support, and AI integration that enables rapid decision making and ensures new capabilities are fielded quickly to support those in the fight. The objective is to help forces prepare, adapt, and operate effectively in degraded and contested environments.

The Warrior Care portfolio sustains combat effectiveness by supporting warriors and their families/caregivers through recovery, transition, and long-term well-being. KSA Integration provides direct, mission-focused support across health and wellness, employment, and resource coordination, including leading the Marine Corps Wounded Warrior Call Center with 24/7/365 outreach for more than 30,000 Wounded, Ill, and Injured Marines and their families/caregivers. Through personalized advocacy, care coordination, and close support to the Wounded Warrior Regiment, this work preserves the force and ensures Marines are supported through recovery, return to duty, or transition.

 Readiness and Care Are Inseparable
KSA’s mission is to ensure that readiness and care go hand in hand. Our focus is on supporting warfighting effectiveness by empowering warriors at every level—delivering combat-ready capability, sustaining the force, and safeguarding the health and resilience of those who serve. Warrior Care is not an afterthought; it is a critical component of operational readiness. By addressing physical, psychological, and social needs, we ensure that Marines—our warriors—are prepared to fight, endure, and prevail in the most demanding environments. This holistic approach strengthens individual resilience, enhances unit cohesion, and guarantees that the force remains lethal, adaptive, and ready for any challenge.

An Open Letter to KSA Staff, Partners, and Friends

To our Team and Friends,

For almost 15 years, KSA Integration has been providing service, integrity, and value to our customers. Our dedicated professionals are more than deserving of the accolades we annually receive, including Inc. magazine’s national Best Workplace, Best for Vets, Hire Vets Platinum award, and regular compliments on excellent work. Our company is healthy, growing, and well postured to progress. Our future is bright.

We understand the impact each KSA team member brings to our customers and to the company. Our intent as owners is to sustain and grow KSA for the long-term.  As part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring the long-term success and sustainability of KSA Integration it is crucial to have a comprehensive succession plan in place.

Considering the inevitability of changes in leadership and the future growth of our company, we must proactively plan for the transition of key roles and responsibilities. A well-thought-out succession plan will not only ensure a smooth transfer of leadership but also maintain continuity in operations and uphold our company’s values and vision. For the long-term success of the company, Keith intends to evolve into a supporting role rather than as the day-to-day CEO.  And Bryan needs to be, and be seen, as the current day-to-day and future leadership of KSA, the CEO.

Effective this month, Keith will step down from the CEO title, remaining active in KSA indefinitely as Founder and majority owner.  Bryan will move into the Chief Executive Officer position, with Bob Watt replacing Bryan as Chief Operating Officer. In the near future, KSA will announce a new Director of Business Development.

As KSA’s new CEO, Bryan has a strong background in organizational leadership and strategic analysis, delivering positive outcomes in complex organizational environments. In 2015, Keith and Bryan partnered to grow KSA Integration from a sole proprietorship to a thriving small business. Most recently, as the Chief Operating Officer, Bryan had oversight of company operations and drove KSA’s operational activities in alignment with strategic goals. Prior to KSA, Bryan led analytical studies for the Homeland Security Studies and Analysis Institute, the Department of Homeland Security’s federally funded research and development center. Bryan’s experience in leading high-impact projects, developing internal business processes, and driving successful business proposals have been instrumental in advancing operational efficiency.

As KSA’s new COO, Bob brings over 20 years of proven leadership and business development expertise, having steering complex projects and driven strategic growth across government and industry sectors. As KSA’s Director of Business Development, Bob developed, managed, and executed a 5-year business pipeline encompassing government and industry markets. Prior to joining KSA, Bob directed the Navy & Marine Corps Expeditionary business segment at Booz Allen Hamilton. A retired US Air Force officer, Bob oversaw programs ranging from small-scale initiatives to multi-billion-dollar procurement efforts while on active duty. He specialized in command-and-control systems, aircraft procurement, and air and missile defense systems, playing a pivotal role in developing new analysis and decision support tools that enhanced defense capabilities.

As we grow capabilities, our vision for KSA remains the same: to support our Veterans and deliver value to our customers. The company’s success has been because of our talented team, and we are tremendously grateful for the opportunity to further its growth alongside each of you.

Very respectfully,

Keith and Bryan

Team KSA Supports VA-sponsored Veteran Reintegration and Readjustment Retreat Program

Since September 2022, KSA has been supporting the Veteran Administration’s (VA) reintegration and readjustment retreat program. KSA, alongside our partner Magellan Federal, has planned and conducted 15 retreats, benefiting 199 veterans and their spouses. The VA has selected eligible veterans from across 35 states and territories for diverse cohorts, including all-female, all-male, couples, and transgender veterans.

These retreats are thoughtfully designed, considering the unique needs of each veteran and their preferences. Our partner Magellan Federal provides clinicians, also veterans or family members of veterans, who specialize in various counseling disciplines, such as Financial and Occupational Counseling, Stress Reduction and Management Strategies, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and many others. Team KSA’s inclusive approach strikes a balance between structured classroom time and outdoor recreational activities such as canoeing and axe throwing, ensuring memorable experiences in safe and open environments. This comprehensive support covers transportation, lodging, and meals in ADA-compliant venues. Veterans consistently emphasize the positive impact retreats have on their mental health challenges.

If you are a Veteran dealing with the difficulties of readjusting to life after your time in uniform, reach out to your local Vet Center and ask about future retreat opportunities

KSA Integration Ranks Among Highest-Scoring Businesses on Inc. Magazine’s Annual List of Best Workplaces for 2023

Stafford, VA | May 9, 2023 – KSA Integration has been named to Inc. magazine’s annual Best Workplaces list. Featured in the May/June 2023 issue, and prominently featured on Inc.com, the list is the result of a comprehensive measurement of American companies that have excelled in creating exceptional workplaces and company culture, whether operating in a physical or a virtual facility. This year marks the fourth time in the last five years KSA has been awarded this significant accolade.

After collecting data from thousands of submissions, Inc. selected 591 honorees in 2023. Each company that was nominated took part in an employee survey, conducted by Quantum Workplace, which included topics such as management effectiveness, perks, fostering employee growth, and overall company culture. The organization’s benefits were also audited to determine overall score and ranking.

“Being named to Best Workplaces is an honor that only a small fraction of companies have been able to claim,” says Inc. editor-in-chief Scott Omelianuk. “Proving to the world that you’re a magnet for talent and have a culture that keeps teams engaged, productive, and proud to come to work is a truly remarkable achievement.”

While researching KSA and our survey results, Inc. presented the following distinctions:

  • 97% of KSA employees report being “highly engaged”
  • Senior Leaders value people as their most important resource
  • KSA’s benefits were ranked above average compared to similar-sized companies in the D.C. Metropolitan area
  • The top word that describes KSA is “Supportive”

Additionally, 95% of men and 100% of women agreed they will be recognized for contributing to the organization’s success. Bryan Altmire, Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of KSA, celebrates this achievement: “My business partner, LtGen Keith Stalder (USMC, Ret.), and I are privileged to be named Best Workplace once again. Our success as a company is a direct reflection of the success of our people, and we are humbled by the positive feedback of the hardworking men and women of KSA. I look forward to another year of professionalism, growth, and exceptional support for our clients.”

Internal Communication

“Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships.” – Michael Jordan

Challenges with internal communication are evident in every type and size of organization, from small business to big government. Inadequate communication creates information silos and leads to the bystander effect. Duplication of effort, low morale, and “that’s not my job” attitude combine to lessen productivity, and, as these examples illustrate, ultimately risk organizational failure.

1) WeWork Co-Founder and CEO Adam Neumann fostered a culture that discouraged information sharing and transparency, leading, in 2019, to the commercial real estate company’s dramatic breakdown.

2) In 2018, poor internal reporting and the absence of honest feedback led to the resignation of several top male executives at Nike over treatment of women in the workplace.

3) At the macro level, consequences of bad internal communication even have U.S. national security implications: at least three different intelligence and homeland security entities failed to share information on Tamerlan Tsarnaev, architect of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, who had been recently radicalized overseas.

Effective internal communication:

  • Keeps your people informed and engaged. People are the lifeblood of any organization. If employees are conversant and connected, they will perform their jobs and look for ways to propel the organization forward.
  • Influences organizational culture. Employees that regularly receive top-down information from leadership and collaborate often with each other will develop an appreciation for the organization’s mission, why it matters, and what it stands for.
  • Encourages honest discussion and debate. Listening and genuinely caring is one of leaders’ most important jobs. Employee opinions matter and they tell discerning leaders volumes about the organization, its problems, innovations, solutions, health, and future.

For leaders, successful internal communication is crucial to a highly functioning organization. Messages to the workforce should be planned, deliberate, straightforward, and in support of a specific goal or vision. Inconsistent, nebulous, and excessive information underserves the organization by confusing the workforce and reducing the trust necessary for effective communication. Leaders should include metrics whenever possible and provide feedback channels. Anonymous employee engagement surveys are a useful way to gauge interest organization-wide and an opportunity for leaders to learn what isn’t being said at meetings.

It is also incumbent on leaders to encourage cross-departmental communication. One way to accomplish this is hosting regular team meetings or Q&A sessions where departments can share information, collaborate, and voice opinions or concerns. Over time, these habits and practices become an essential part of the organization’s culture, where regular internal communication is not only encouraged but vital to its success. Employees want to know the organization’s leaders are transparent, understanding, and providing their people with every means to be successful. Effective internal communication is critical to achieving this employee satisfaction and ultimately a high performing organization.

“We are stronger when we listen, and smarter when we share.” – Rania Al-Abdullah

Authority and Responsibility

Straightforward organizational challenges can have well defined solutions around which general agreements are easily made.  But for serious matters, the challenges, let alone solutions, are rarely straightforward.  Problems like this are complex, difficult, mysterious, and sometimes require gut wrenching choices, if properly addressed.  This is where a clear understanding of the authority and responsibility to secure the right outcomes is essential.

Surprisingly enough, in many organizations, the matter of making clear in whom the responsibility and authority lays for tasks, projects, and processes are ambiguous; unstated and left to the imagination of the workforce, including the person who will ultimately be seen as the “responsible party”.

It’s not difficult to visualize the effects and results of this kind of arrangement.  A consensus based dynamic necessarily takes over:

  • Outputs are the “lowest common denominator” outcome on which all can agree.
  • Co-workers minimize the impact of collaboration on their office rather than maximizing broader organizational benefits.
  • Innovation, creativity, adaptation, critical thinking, and advocacy are discouraged; even punished.
  • Outspoken personalities dominate collaboration.
  • Everyone has a veto, knows it, and feels empowered to exercise it.
  • Projects and processes can and do stop altogether when a single party refuses to act.
  • It can be difficult to determine if a decision or outcome was reached at all.
  • There are minimal or no sustainment of outcomes.
  • People simply refuse to show up for planning sessions and meetings.
  • Consensus accommodations are made to work around the personalities involved instead of doing what is best for the organization.
  • The status quo usually prevails.

So much harm comes of this kind of gap in an organization, but it’s so simple to avoid.  Leaders at every level can:

  • Explicitly and clearly identify the person responsible and confer on her or him the authority needed to complete the task, project, or govern the process.
  • Make it known to all the participants and their bosses.
  • Put it in writing.
  • Empower the collaboration effort with your own clear intent. Tell the leader, his team, and their bosses: what is the purpose, a little about the method of getting there, and what the final product will be in your mind.
  • Tell them what it is not.
  • Be available for follow up discussions and interim guidance as work proceeds.
  • Ask how it is going.
  • Make it evident to all that the person in charge is answerable for the final outcome by engaging them as the group leader.
  • Ask how you can help the project leader, then do it.
  • Precisely capture any decisions that are needed along the way and act on them.
  • Follow up with the project leader to ensure that progress is being made. If not, find out why and help fix it
  • Publicly praise and thank the team and especially its leader. Tell their bosses too.

It’s easy to do and will be appreciated by everyone involved.  Over time, employees will embrace the company’s approach to authority and responsibility and it will become second nature.

Organizational Structures Create Processes

Almost every business and organization has an organizational diagram with boxes connected by lines that depict functional and hierarchical relationships of the departments, divisions, branches, and offices within. These diagrams are a useful starting point to understanding general relationships within the company, but can’t convey much about how the elements work together.

As important as the diagram “boxes” are, it’s just as important to understand the purpose of the lines connecting the boxes. In broad terms, these lines represent the processes of the business. Along these lines should flow the planning, coordination, decision making, information sharing, assessing, and more.

The lines are the nervous system of the company; the neural activity that connects the capability and capacity in order to produce action. If the processes represented by the lines are efficient and effective, the company or organization has a head start on being a high performing entity. Conversely, if the processes represented by the lines are inadequate, this shows up as dysfunction, inefficiency, and low performance.

A good example are decision making processes. Every business makes decisions all day long. Some are simple and straight forward, others are complex. The complex ones require preparation, planning, coordination, research, and staffing if the best decision is to be taken; 1) What are the facts that matter? 2) What do they mean in this decision? 3) What do we do about it? But many organizations have flawed or no decision support process to help senior leaders come to the best resolution(s). The results are usually mediocre decisions and lousy organizational performance. I see it all the time.

The structural arrangement of the company is important, but the process that connect the parts are equally important and usually overlooked by leaders. All too frequently companies reorganize themselves to solve what is in reality a process problem. Leaders need to understand the symbiotic relationship between organizational structure and processes.

KSA Integration Named Best For Vets Employer Two Years In A Row

Stafford, VA | Nov 10, 2021 – Military Times recently announced its 2021 Best for Vets: Employers rankings. KSA Integration made the list for the second year in a row.

This year, almost 200 organizations submitted responses to the Best for Vets: Employers survey that fielded from July to September, and 161 employers made the list. This editorially independent program produces a highly respected analysis of a company’s efforts to recruit, retain, and support current and former service members, military spouses, and military caregivers.

The 2021 rankings can be found here: bestforvets2021.militarytimes.com

Over 70% of KSA’s work force are veterans who retired from military service or serve among the active ranks. KSA prides itself on the company’s commitment to serving those who served. We apply that same level of care to our company’s culture, competitive benefits, and work-life balance. “I am honored KSA received this prestigious award and privileged to be working with a team so dedicated to veterans support and issues. KSA is devoted to maintaining programs and policies that support veterans’ post-military careers,” says KSA Founder and CEO LtGen Keith Stalder (USMC, ret.).

This year, KSA’s Best for Vets survey received the following commendations:

  • 4th in Small or Medium-Sized Businesses category
  • 7th in Consulting
  • 26th in the state of Virginia

“Military Times continues to set the standard for employer rankings for transitioning service members and veterans. Although often imitated, there is no other list that comes close to Best for Vets: Employers,” says Mort Greenberg, SVP of media solutions at Military Times. “We stand by the rigor and soundness of this survey, which spotlights companies’ employment programs that help transitioning service members excel in their post-military careers.”

This year, Military Times collaborated with Fors Marsh Group (FMG) to update the research methodology and analysis from previous years to provide a streamlined, user-friendly survey experience for participants. The survey captured the areas of greatest importance to transitioning service members, veterans, and their families when looking for an employer. Recruitment and employment practices, as well as retention and support programs, were given the most weight and importance in scoring and final rankings.

“As a company that’s proud to hire military veterans and their family members, we see this survey and our partnership with Military Times as an opportunity to further the credibility and recognition of the companies committed to being Best for Vets Employers, as well as a resource for companies seeking to improve or extend their current veteran hiring practices,” said Andy Blenkle, FMG’s vice president of marketing and public service recruitment.

In its 12th year, Military Times Best for Vets: Employers rankings are based on the results of a voluntary survey that covered the policies and practices that make companies an attractive place to work for current employees and future job seekers within the military community.

KSA Continues Crucial Support to Marine Corps Wounded Warrior Regiment

During July, August, and September, KSA Integration’s Wounded Warrior Call Center (WWCC) focused on outreach requests and refinements for cross coordination between adjacent programs supporting the Wounded Warrior Regiment. Alongside our partners Three Wire Systems and Revelations Consulting, our one-of-a-kind systematic approach to Veteran’s Care is part of what has set the KSA Integration Team apart in service delivery.

Beginning in August, and continuing through the end of September, the KSA Integration Team organized special outreach to Veterans affected by natural disasters across the United States through the WWCC. This included flooding in Central Tennessee resulting from Hurricane Ida, multiple hurricanes that impacted the Gulf Coast, and wildfires raging across the West Coast. During August and early September, the entire KSA Integration Team also surged to support and assist hundreds of Veterans troubled by the Afghanistan government’s collapse and subsequent chaotic withdrawal of American and Allied forces.

In addition to Veteran outreach activities, WWCC staff also coordinated with the Wounded Warrior Regiment IT Department to conduct in-depth planning and process refinement support for the Marine Corps Wounded, Ill, and Injured Tracking System updates. Specifically, coordination was conducted with the Recovery Care Coordination Program, Medical Cell, and District Injured Support Coordinators for the effective and efficient transfer of recovering Service Members between programs. Congratulations to all involved on the KSA Integration Team for their exceptional efforts in setting the standard!
